WWE Summerslam 2014 Buildup: Can WWE Creative Only Keep Things Creative Once a Year?

WWE Summerslam

If you had caught the July 1st edition of the Wrestling is Real podcast, you had heard me mention how the post-Battleground edition of Raw was full of hot shot booking for this year’s Summerslam. In retrospect, that type of booking is indicative of WWE Creative at any time except for Wrestlemania season.

The Intercontinental Title still has not been given a lot of time or a lot of relevance except to rebuild the Miz’s new Hollywood persona. So, with two weeks ago and some second hand involvement in the Dean Ambrose/ Seth Rollins storyline we get Dolph Ziggler facing the Miz with not much of a story to go with.

Chris Jericho and Bray Wyatt started off good leading into a win for Jericho at Battleground, but aside from a locker room attack and some random matches with Rowan and Harper, there hasn’t been much added to the match. Rusev and Jack Swagger is basically running on auto-pilot.

Randy Orton and Roman Reigns can be summed up in one huge beatdown by Orton to Reigns. The simple story that as long as Reigns is in the way, Randy will not get his rematch for the world title is simply weak.

On the positive side, AJ vs Paige in the Divas title feud has been picking up nicely from week to week. Paige’s heel turn has really helped get over more than when she was champion. Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose I would say their buildup has stayed strong.

The Brie Bella/ Stephanie McMahon featured attraction has been very good solely because of the great work Stephanie has done in the storyline. She definitely has learned a lot from daddy Vince on getting great crowd heat. and taking humiliation like a McMahon should.

Finally, even though Lesnar made one appearance post Battleground, the story for his world title match with John Cena has a great story built in going back to Extreme Rules 2012 adding in the breaking of the Undertaker streak. Cena/Lesnar is the money match for Summerslam that creative could not possibly screw up. I think that is the only match that WWE Creative did not have much to do with.

Even WWE Creative is not hitting home run compelling storylines, I still feel lucky because of the ongoing evolution of new stars like Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, Rusev and Bray Wyatt into the fold, I’m still very excited about Summerslam because there will be some memorable moments.

Speaking of moments, hope everyone has forgotten that horrible Ring of Fire match from last year. Oops!- KOP
